News Release: 5/6/2025

Friends of Phelps County,

The Phelps County Historical Society’s mission has always been to preserve and provide access to Phelps County’s history. Since its establishment in 1939, PCHS has collected over 1000 artifacts, assisted a citizen collective with saving the original Civil War era courthouse, and written dozens of newsletters filled with a wealth of historical information. PCHS has been able to preserve Phelps County history through donations, grant funds and volunteer efforts.

We are asking for the community’s help to rebuild the windows and doorways on the 1860 courthouse building. The Old Courthouse suffered damage to the upstairs windows during the tornado that stuck Rolla in March. Additionally, all of the nine pane, single hung wood windows need to be replaced. The new replacement windows that we are raising money for with this campaign will be energy efficient, weather resistant, and historically accurate, with at least a 50 year warranty.  Our goal is to usher the Phelps County Historical holdings into the modern age, so that they can continue to be preserved for our future generations.
